UFC releases list of Strikeforce fighters moving over

Since the announcement was made that Strikeforce would be closing it’s doors the obvious question had been repeatedly asked regarding just who from that promotion would make the move over to the UFC after it was done.

The fate of some fighters had already been announced before the final show took place with the likes of Derek Brunson, Tyron Woodley & Robbie Lawler being handed UFC fights. Strikeforce held it’s final event last weekend and on last night’s edition of ‘UFC Tonight’, Ariel Helwani revealed a list of names of fighters that will be taking their place under the employment of the worlds best known MMA promotion. Those name are:

  • Daniel Cormier

  • Gegard Mousasi
  • Gian Villante

  • Roger Gracie
  • Tim Kennedy
  • Lorenz Larkin
  • Luke Rockhold
  • Ronaldo Souza

  • Roger Bowling
  • Jason High
  • Nate Marquardt
  • Tarec Saffiedine
  • Bobby Voelker

  • Ryan Couture
  • Pat Healy
  • Kurt Holobaugh
  • Adriano Martins
  • Gilbert Melendez
  • K.J. Noons
  • Josh Thomson

Most of these names should not come as a surprise, especially since a lot of them were the winners from Saturday night who had already been all but promised a shot in the big league, however both K.J. Noons and Kurt Holobaugh will also be given their chance despite losing and given the performances that they put in I don’t many will complain aout that decision.

The most notable omission from this list though is clearly Josh Barnett. Given his history with the UFC this doesn’t exactly come as a shock, being stripped of the Heavyweight Title after failing a drugs test and generally having a luke warm at best relationship with Dana could well be enough to block his return to his old stomping ground. However given that this was not a final list and that the general feeling among fans appears to be that they would like to see the Warmaster get one last crack in the big time there is still a chance that we may yet get to experience Barnett in the Octagon.

For now though the names above are set in stone and you can expect to see them appear on up coming cards in 2013. Cormier & Melendez are in fact already booked to face Frank Mir and Benson Henderson respectively at UFC on FOX 7.

The UFC kicks off it’s 2013 schedule this Saturday in Brazil with UFC on FX: Belfort vs. Bisping and we have a review of the event already up so please check that out.
